The Bishoftu International Airport Project, located near Bishoftu Town about 40 km south of Addis Ababa, is a flagship national infrastructure initiative led by the Ethiopian Airlines Group. To complement the main Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), four component-specific ESIA studies have been prepared for the Runway and Taxiway, Cargo Handling Facility, Airport City, and Fuel Farm.
These subcomponent assessments provide focused analyses and targeted Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs) that address the unique environmental and social risks of each element, while remaining consistent with the frameworks, baseline data, and institutional arrangements described in the main ESIA report. All four studies were conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority, the African Development Bank’s Integrated Safeguards System, the IFC Performance Standards, and the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework.
Key Highlights of the Component-Specific ESIAs
Together, these four ESIA documents reinforce the project’s strong commitment to sustainability, environmental protection, and social responsibility. The integrated mitigation and monitoring mechanisms aim to reduce environmental risks, safeguard community well- being, and ensure compliance with both national regulations and international best practices.
Stakeholders, regulatory authorities, and the public are encouraged to refer to the main Bishoftu International Airport ESIA report for comprehensive project-wide baseline data and cumulative impact assessment, and to review the subcomponent ESIAs for detailed management approaches relevant to each infrastructure element.
