Environmental and Social Management Plans – Summary – Bishoftu International Airport Project

As part of the Bishoftu International Airport Project, six Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs) were prepared to ensure safe, sustainable, and compliant project implementation. These plans follow Ethiopian EPA requirements and international standards (AfDB, IFC, World Bank ESF).

  • Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP): The SEP guides how the project communicates with communities, authorities, and other stakeholders. It ensures timely information sharing, meaningful consultation, and a functional grievance redress mechanism so community concerns are addressed fairly and transparently.
  • Hazardous Waste Management Plan: This plan outlines safe procedures for handling, storing, transporting, and disposing of hazardous materials. It aims to prevent pollution, avoid spills, and protect public health, biodiversity, soil, and water resources throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Traffic Management Plan (TMP): The TMP provides measures to reduce traffic congestion and safety risks during construction. It includes designated routes, speed limits, signage, and coordination with local authorities to ensure the safety of road users, communities, and project personnel.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan (EPRP): The EPRP sets out how the project will prevent and respond to emergencies such as fires, spills, accidents, or natural hazards. It includes emergency organization, communication procedures, evacuation routes, training, and rapid response actions.
  • Labour Management Procedure (LMP): The LMP ensures fair, safe, and lawful treatment of all project workers. It includes recruitment procedures, worker rights, a labour grievance mechanism, and measures to protect against child labour, forced labour, discrimination, and gender-based violence.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Plan (OHSP): The OHSP outlines workplace safety measures to prevent accidents and health risks. It includes safety training, PPE requirements, site safety rules, hazard control procedures, and incident reporting to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel.
